Customizing your messages to your audience such that the right group receives the proper communications is critical to your business's success. With tinyEmail's custom segments, you can do just that. Here, we'll go through how you can easily create and update audience segments in tinyEmail.

This feature is only available to users on the Standard and higher plans. Segments are not available in the free plan. To see plan features, go to our pricing page.

Creating a new segment

Head over to your Audience section from your dashboard by clicking on the left navigation menu. Next, click on the "Add new" button on the top right corner of the page and select "Add segment" from the dropdown menu. Next, give your segment a recognizable name and click on "Continue" to the next step.

Defining segment rules

Here, you can set the rules that define who should be a part of your segment. There are many rule sets that pan everything from engagement with your previous messages to whether or not they were part of earlier campaigns to custom subscriber data such as last purchase date, which you can manually add to your subscribers or through integrations.

A quick tip on using AND and OR operators while defining segment rules. AND is exclusive β€” either A or B but not both. OR is inclusive β€” A or B or both.

Start by selecting the audience source you'd like to create a segment on. You can pick from the dropdown list or search for an audience name under Audience and In if you'd like to make the segment based on whether subscribers are in that audience or use Not in if you want to ensure subscribers are not a part of some audiences.

Next, apply the conditions as needed to create the perfect segment. You can see a real-time summary of who's in your segment based on your rules by looking at the Segment summary card. Click on Refresh to see updated results.

Segment rule types and possible combinations

  • Audience - Checks to see if subscribers are in or not in your given list of audience sources.

Based on which operator you select, you can apply several robust conditions to precisely define your segment.

  • Subscriber - Conditions related to custom traits and data related to your subscribers, such as demographic and purchase data.

To construct your rule segment, you can combine the following subscriber information and data fields.

You can update your subscriber lists with richer information by manually uploading more data, re-syncing your audience source or adding a new integration.

Once you are satisfied with the rule sets and conditions you have created, you can click on the Preview button to see the subscribers in your newly created segment. Your segment is automatically saved at this point. You may choose to save it again as a new segment by clicking Save as.

Finding and using your saved segments

Your saved segments can be found under the Audience section of tinyEmail. You will see a Segments tab under Audience, listing all your previously created segments.

While creating a new campaign, you can pick previously built segments under the Segments tab in the audience selection step.

Well done!

You are now ready to send highly personalized messages to your subscribers.
